Bike fans hand-deliver petition to BBC as support reaches 10,000
A group of bike fans descended upon the BBC at Manchester’s MediaCityUK to hand-deliver a petition calling for 2017 FIM Superbike World Champion, Jonathan Rea, to be named on the BBC Sports Personality of the Year (SPOTY) 2017 shortlist. Clad in leathers, the bikers passed the document, which has received over 10,000 online signatures, to the BBC SPOTY team.
The e-petition was launched by leading motorcycle insurance broker, Carole Nash, after its Brand Ambassador, Jonathan made history to become the first ever rider to win three successive world championships.
However, despite his race track achievements, Jonathan has never been recognised by the BBC amongst his high-achieving sporting peers. Unsurprisingly, the bid to get the sporting hero included in the shortlist quickly gained momentum online with fans flocking to sign the e-petition.
Jonathan, who will be awarded a prestigious MBE as part of the Queen’s Birthday Honours on 21st November, topped off the 2017 Superbike season with a triumphant win at Qatar – his 16th win of the season.
Rebecca Donohue, Head of Marketing at Carole Nash, says: “We couldn’t be happier with the way supporters have got behind our e-petition. Jonathan is one of the finest sportspeople around and an overall down-to-earth bloke, so it’s only right that his achievements get the recognition they deserve. We’re excited to see what happens when the shortlist announcement is made at the end of the month and we hope that our hard work comes to fruition, and the Great British public get the result they’re after.”
Humbled by the support of fans, Jonathan Rea says: “I don’t know if I am worthy or not of an award as big as BBC Sports Personality, but for others to be talking about me in this way is hugely flattering.
“I grew up watching the awards and to potentially follow in the footsteps of some of my all-time heroes like Tony McCoy and Barry McGuigan, who have both won the award, would be a dream come true. I’d like to thank Carole Nash for wanting to mark my achievement in this way. I have had a relationship with them for a number of years now and I have always been grateful for their support.”
